I found this chapter to be quite interesting & eye-opening. I have a better understanding of how important technology is to me, as a future educator, & to my future students. Technology is the key to many students’ futures. This chapter described the various changes that have come about for the schools in our society. The chapter began by simply telling about how school itself was created & it then described the various advances that have been implemented since then. It started with simply learning how to read or how to write & it quickly advanced from there. Throughout the entire chapter it described how adults would teach children what the most important tools are in order to get a job. My biggest question after reading this chapter would be that if these various technology tools are the key for students of our age to get a job, why are we holding these tools back? Shouldn’t the adults & educators of our society teach our future generations about the tools that can help them get a job?
There was one simple sentence in this chapter that stuck out to me. This sentence was describing the apprenticeship that used to occur in our society. Children back then used to learn from their parents or other adults. The sentence that stuck out the most said “They learned by observation, imitation, & guided practice.” This sentence was so simple, yet so powerful at the same time. This sentence is one of the core values for my future classroom. I plan to use technology in my future classroom & I plan to educate of students about it too. I plan to demonstrate the technology within my lesson, I plan to have my students observe the technology, & I plan to have my students practice using the technology while I guide them to success. This chapter has taught me to encourage my students to use technology & to teach them about the amazing advances that have happened in the past.
