My thoughts on Chapters 1-3 of "Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts"

The reading we have done within these chapters has greatly influenced how I view technology in the classroom. I still have many questions about technology, but these few chapters have ensured me that the use of technology can be so positively influential! As I was reading I came across a certain paragraph that talked about the use of the web in education. The authors of this book quoted “Our students’ realities in terms of the way they communicate and learn are very different from our own. By and large, they are ‘out there’ using a wide variety of technologies that they are told they can’t use when they come to school.” This one quote literally made me stop dead in my reading tracks. I have never looked at technology from a student’s point of view. As a future educator I see students trying to secretly use cell phones, iPods, etc in the classroom, but students wouldn’t have to hide it if we incorporated these things into our classrooms!
One thing I will be doing differently as a result of this reading will be incorporating a student blog into my classroom. I want all of my students to have access to post ideas, reviews, opinions, etc. I would hope to then contact a teacher in either another state or even country; I would hope that his/her students would also have access. It would be an incredible experience for my students to have input from students in a different setting, community, culture, etc. It would be similar to “pen pals,” but it would be on a blog so that the students would be able to communicate more easily & more often! I remember having a pen pal in elementary school, but I only have the opportunity to write three, maybe four, letters throughout the whole year. With a blog, my students would be able to communicate with these other students on a weekly basis, maybe even daily!
