My thoughts on Chapter 10 of Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology

This chapter truly summarized the previous chapters we have read, while putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together. The chapter began by discussing the new vision for education and how we need to rethink education. One of the beginning chapters stated “This demands rethinking education not in isolation, but considering the interplay of society, education, and learning.” I thought this quote was so powerful because all along I had been thinking about the various ways that I can change my classroom. I was thinking about the specifics rather than the big picture. This chapter helped me see that all of the chapters we have read thus far are intertwined and should be used to see the “new vision for education.” This was continued to talk about in the section on “Rethinking Learning” when the authors talked about how people and politicians were thinking too details like I was. These people aren’t looking at the big picture, they are also looking at specifics such as “How can we develop games to teach history?” or “How can we make technology resources available to more people?” They are NOT asking themselves the question they SHOULD be asking themselves which is “How can we improve schools?”
The main thing I will take from this chapter is the way that I view education as a whole. I will try to look at education as an intertwined system rather than just my future classroom. There are so many more factors to education that will in the end influence my specific classroom. I hope I can remember to ask myself “How can we improve schools?” rather than asking myself “What can I change about my classroom?” This whole book has helped me to realize that education is a life-long process that is continuously changing in our society. We, as educators, have to be the first to recognize that change and to help others to recognize it too!
