My thoughts on Chapter 6 of "Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology"

This chapter really surprised me. After reading the last chapter, I was very hesitant & concerned about the various learning experiences we have in our world. I was worried that these learning experiences would take away from the actual schools & the classrooms that I will be teaching in the future. This chapter on the other hand, explained many of the benefits that have come from these various learning experiences. It compared these new learning experiences to the past, when we had apprenticeships, and they are all very similar. I agreed very much with the steps that were taken during apprenticeship. It was based off modeling, working together, and then letting the student be independent. I think this is how all learning should be handled. This has showed me that I have to use these procedures in my classroom, especially when I am handling technology. I cannot simply send my students off to work with a new tool; I will have to model the tool, work with my students using this tool, and then I can send them off to be independent.
One thing that this chapter has influenced about my future as an educator will be about the way I handle various activities within my classroom. I will use the process of model, work together, and work independently. For example, when I introduce Blogs into my classroom, I will have to model how to use a blog first. I might show them my personal blog or other appropriate student blogs. Then I would create a class blog that we can all work on together. We will continue doing this until I feel as though my students have mastered how to use a blog. Then I will let them work independently while still monitoring what they are doing in case they need help.
