I feel as though I exerted a lot of effort in creating this iRLO, especially considering the fact that I had never worked with this type of technological tool before. I began by finding a topic that I wanted to work with and I chose rounding. I chose this topic because I am currently doing a practicum in a third grade classroom and this is something that the students I am working with were having trouble with. I then found the content standard that went along with the information I wanted my students to review. After finding the content I started my project. One of the reasons I feel as though I exerted quite a large amount of effort is because I never gave up. Right away when I started working with the program Scratch I was confused. I had trouble figuring out how to create more than one sprite and then how to hide or show these sprites at different times. I took the time and effort to contact Professor Boyer to set up a time to come in and get help. I also made sure to do this at least 4-5 days in advance of when the project was due in case I had other questions. Once I received help with Scratch I was able to put together the type of review I was looking to create. I was then very excited to read the feedback that my peers had for me. I thought this was extremely helpful and I truly took my peers’ advice. I created and added quite a few things to my project before re-submitting the final product.
I think designing and sharing an iRLO impacts my future teaching because it gives me the resources that I need to help my students if they are having trouble in a particular area. If I notice that a majority of my students are having trouble in math, specifically with rounding, I now have the resources to make a review game for them to play. It is an exciting and motivating, yet educational. It is something that can also be used for various people over and over again. I also think creating an iRLO impacts my future as an educator because by seeing all of my classmates’ projects it helped me to see the range of subjects that could benefit from Scratch. Everyone did something so entirely different that it made me realize I could use Scratch in any subject area of my classroom.
